Peoria, IL The Downtown Development Corporation plans to acquire Riverfront Village from Riverfront Villagers Developers LLC.

Joe’s Crab Shack, New Amsterdam Bar and Restaurant and the Chamber of Commerce currently operate form the area.

The DDC plans to transfer the acquired development rights and physical property to the City of Peoria. The City would use it as part of its plan to revamp the riverfront.

“A green riverfront with opportunities for recreation,” says Downtown Development Corporation of Peoria President/CEO Michael Freilinger.

But the plans aren’t final and Freilinger is looking for feedback from the public as to what the new river front should look like.

“Our vision of what we are presenting today is meant to be an opening of what our riverfront is going to look like,” says Frielinger.

As for the businesses, Joe’s Crab Shack announced it had closed Monday. New Amsterdam and the Greater Peoria Business Alliance/ Greater Peoria Economic Development Council plan to relocate within the next year.

The city will be asked to allocate $1 million to acquire the rights from the DDC. In a press release, the DDC says this amount is far less than costs to perform City-obligated repairs and restoration to the platform.
